## Solving Absolute Value Equations

#### Description

This lesson discusses absolute value and how it relates to equality.

#### Objectives

Understands that numbers can be represented in a variety of equivalent forms using integers, fractions, decimals, and percents, scientific notation, exponents, radicals, absolute value, or logarithms.

Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides real numbers, including square roots and exponents using appropriate methods of computing (mental mathematics, paper-and-pencil, calculator).

#### Materials

- Overhead transparencies (if examples are to be worked on overhead) for Solving Absolute Value Equations (see attached file).

#### Preparations

#### Procedures

Note: This lesson does not address percents, scientific notation, and logarithms. This lesson does not address square roots or exponents. This lesson contains a checklist to assist the teacher in determining which students need remediation. The sole purpose of this checklist is to aide the teacher in identifying students that need remediation. Students who meet the ìCî criteria are ready for the next level of learning. The teacher may also use a percentage basis to award grades for the handout.
